In this episode, I speak to Heather whos son Joe was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2019 about how her and her family navigated their first year of a type 1 diagnosis.

The backdrop to our chat is a letter Heather wrote to Joe about their and his first year living with type 1 diabetes. The letter provides an open and emotional insight into what the first year has been like for the family. It documents the good and bad times and everything inbetween. Reading the letter for this first time touched my heart. You can read the letter here

Heather and I also talk about:
- Heather’s motivation for writing the letter to Joe
- Joe’s diagnosis story including a number of missed diagnosis’
- learning to accept that both the good and bad times can co-exist when diagnosed with type 1
- how the type 1 diagnosis has impacted on Joe’s younger brother
- dealing with separate grief and working together as parents and the importance of talking to each other

I enjoyed this conversation with Heather and appreciate her honesty and openness throughout our chat.
